Symbolism
The game of Blitzball that Finny creates is a symbol that is closely tied to his character. In Blitzball, everyone competes but no one wins and they make up the rules as the game is played. This game is symbolic of his attitude toward life.
Finny is also associated symbolically with the Summer Session at Devon, with its fun atmosphere and warm weather. The Summer Session is a time of freedom and symbolizes innocence and youth, which resembles Finny's characteristics. The session comes to an end with Finny's symbolic fall, which is the climax of the novel. Finny's fall symbolizes a fall from innocence, for example the students at Devon are developed from childhood into a matter of good and evil that matures them.
