The theme of
codependency and establishing your true identity ties in with Finny. Finny is
envied because of his dominating spirit and his athletic abilities, and as
Finny demonstrates these strengths, Gene feels the need to show off his
academic abilities. When Gene pushes Finny out of the tree, their friendship is
steered in a different direction so that codependency rather than jealousy characterizes
it. The scene following Finny’s fall symbolizes this change in relationship.
Finny and Gene begin to depend on each other for support and start to use each
other’s strengths as their own. Finny can no longer play sports, so instead of
giving up he depends on Gene to do it for him. As Finny trains Gene to be in
the Olympics, it is as if he is living as a part of Gene. This codependency
helps establish their true identities.
